Surface Engineering: Where to Start (T2)- 5/19/24

Sunday, May 19, 10:15 a.m.-12:15 p.m.

Summary

Most of the products that we use fail when the surface is worn, cracked or exposed to severe thermo-mechanical stresses.  Consequently, modern manufacturers rely on the use of innovative, surface engineering process to protect the surface of the product and to ensure competitive advantage in the fast-changing global markets. Building this protective layer requires specific combination of substrate, surface and coatings that will improve the durability of the product. This is the process of “Surface Engineering” and has become integral part in the product’s design and planning the relevant manufacturing process.

Topics

  • Fundamentals of Surface Engineering and its role in enhancing the value of engineering components.
  • Key features of Surface Engineering:
    • Preparation of the substrate base
    • Design of a strong interface between the modified substrate and the coating.
    • Design & construction of the required coating.
  • Design principles of an integrated substrate/coating architectures.
  • Surface Engineering, key challenges and opportunities in three major industrial sectors: aerospace, automotive and machining industries.
